“Trust God with the outcomes; tend faithfully to what’s in front of you.”
— A Life of Wildflowers
The World Is Loud — And It’s Affecting Our Homes
The world is loud right now. The news cycles never stop. Social media pulls us into debates, outrage, comparison, and division. And before we know it, our hearts feel heavy… distracted… unsettled.
When we doomscroll, it can increase anxiety, depression, stress levels, and sleep disturbances. It triggers a “stay alert” response in the brain, leading to fatigue, irritability, and physical symptoms such as headaches or muscle tension. And the truth? It can become addictive.
Comparison is another trap. Watching curated, idealized lives online can quietly chip away at our contentment. I love thrift and home improvement videos for inspiration, but I’ve noticed that even those can sometimes create unease in my own heart. Seeing beautifully styled, spotless homes can make my under-construction house feel unfinished.
But here’s the truth: my home is complete because it is filled with love and laughter.
Sometimes the noise doesn’t just live on our screens — it settles into our spirits.
When our minds feel cluttered, it often shows up in our homes, too. That’s one reason I’m so passionate about simplifying our spaces. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you might start with something tangible—like learning how to declutter when you’re overwhelmed. Small physical changes can create surprising mental clarity.
What Happens When We Step Back from the Noise?
What if we unplugged for a while?
It may feel unrealistic to disconnect completely, so start small. Add time limits. Stop scrolling before bed and notice how your sleep changes.
When I started cutting back on my phone usage, I realized how often I subconsciously reached for it. Any moment of boredom became an automatic scroll. It was startling to see how dependent I had become on constant input.
I also began cutting back on podcasts and YouTube. The nonstop stream of information wasn’t just distracting — it was overwhelming my nervous system. It tested my self-discipline more than I expected.
But as I stepped back from social media, my phone, YouTube, and even TV, something shifted.
I had more time.
More quiet.
More clarity.
I read my Bible more. I played with my kids without distraction. I became more attentive. My mood stabilized. I started to feel peace settle into my soul.
And surprisingly… I began to enjoy the quiet.
That’s the beauty of simple living — creating margin on purpose. In Why Less Is More: The Beauty of a Simplified Life, I explain how removing excess from our schedules, homes, and minds creates space for peace.
Tend Faithfully to What’s in Front of You
What if we turned our attention back to what God has already placed in our hands?
Our homes.
Our children.
Our marriages.
Our friendships.
Our daily work.
We don’t have to carry the weight of the world. We aren’t called to fix everything.
We are called to be faithful.
Faithful in the small things.
Faithful in our homes.
Faithful in prayer.
Faithful in loving the people right in front of us.
When we tend carefully to what God has entrusted to us, we can release the rest. We can trust Him with the outcomes.
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you,
all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”
— Isaiah 26:3
Simple Ways to Unplug This Week
Maybe today looks like this:
- Logging off early
- Turning off the news
- Moving social apps off your home screen
- Lighting a candle and making dinner slowly
- Sitting on the floor with your kids
- Opening your Bible instead of your feed
Peace grows in places we intentionally cultivate.
If you need a practical place to begin, instead of scrolling, try simplifying one drawer, one shelf, or one corner. Even decluttering 10–15 items can shift the atmosphere of your home and your heart. My post Simplify Your Life: 150 Things to Declutter Right Now is a helpful starting point.
Trust God with the Outcomes
The world will keep spinning. The headlines will keep updating. The noise will always be available.
But peace is found in smaller places.
In tending your home.
In loving your people.
In trusting that God is sovereign over the things you cannot control.
You don’t have to carry what was never yours to hold.
You can trust God with the outcomes—and faithfully tend to what’s right in front of you.
What’s one way you can unplug this week and refocus on what matters most?
If this message resonated with you, you’re not alone.
